Some of the things we do in PE revolve around specific sports. Other things help the children develop better cardiovascular endurance. I also have activities that are designed to work on coordination and teamwork. There are activities included in my curriculum that are simply designed to get the children moving and to make it fun for them!
One of the students’ favorite things in PE is stations. When I do stations in PE, I set up about five or six different activities and divide the class into that many groups. After explaining each station to them, they are placed at a starting station, and then they begin playing. When time is up, I blow the whistle and everyone moves to the next station. They continue until they have completed every activity. They usually only have about four or five minutes at each station so there is no time to get bored! Some examples of stations we do inside include trampolines, hippity hops, scooters, bean bag toss, pogo sticks and stilts, clap and catch, obstacle course, basketball, wii bowling, etc. It is a lot of fun for everyone because there is little to no standing around waiting on a turn!!
We also have the blessing of using all of our sports facilities. We spend as much time as possible outside playing and getting fresh air. We use the track and the high and long jump. We play soccer and kickball on the fields. We spend lots of time doing a variety of activities in the open field where the football teams practice. The tennis courts are also a fun place for us to play! You will almost always find us outside unless the weather does not allow.
My desire for PE is to show the children that there are many ways to get exercise. I want them to go home and ask for pogo sticks and other toys that we play with so they will get outside more and move their bodies! I want to see them grow up with a lifestyle of physical fitness so they will be healthy adults. These are just some of the ways I try to create in them a love of exercise.
